Kanaka Creek

Kanaka creek

Description

A generally slow moving tidal creek. Approximately 4 miles of kayaking.

From the launch point at Kanaka Creek Park (Riverfront), you can head about 1/2 mile downstream to the mouth of Kanaka where it meets the Fraser River. Or head upstream under the train bridge.

It meanders for about 4 miles, along the way are a pedestrian bridge and a car traffic bridge.

Depending on the water level (tide in or out), sometimes it is so shallow you can only make it about 1/2 mile upstream and you run aground. If you can fight your way over this shallow portion it deepens again until the car bridge.

During flood season (May/June) you can make it about 1000 yds past the automobile bridge, the rest of the year maybe 300 yds and you run into gravel bars.

One problem you may encounter is fallen trees, as it is a salmon spawning creek, any deadfalls are left as they are. Sometimes you can make it over or sometimes under them, other times they will stop you.

All in all its a pleasant 1/2hr to 4 hr round trip.

Along the way you may see: Eagles, Ospreys, Blue Herons, Ducks, Geese, Otters, Musk Rats and Beavers as well as Kingfishers, Dippers and the occassional grebe.
