Trip Island Ford Boat Ramp to Elkton Dump October 2020
From 33 turn on to Island Ford Road around the Thunderbird Café. Drive until the first bridge and take a right at the far side of the bridge. We put in here Parking is free.
Let out second car we parked at the Elkton Dump. From 33 turn in front of Auto Zone onto Old Spotswood Trail. The dump will be over the bridge on the right-hand side. Parking is free.
Estimated time on sign from Island Ford to Elkton is 3-5 hours. We did it in around 2 and a half with individual Kayaks and 3 with a double kayak.
The river level was listed at low normal. Warning the first set of rapids can cause you to turn over if you take the far-left hand side. It looks calmer but then has some big rocks that we hit and flipped in the 2-person Kayak. Then we hit waist level mud trying to flip the kayak back over, it was a bit of a challenge. The rest of the rapids are mild and at the low normal river level we only had to scoot a few times to get off of rocks in the single kayaks. In the double we had to get out a push a couple of times. You know you are at the end of the trip you will go under a railroad bridge and then under 33
