Star made a previous whitewater kayak that mimicked the performance of a hard-shell called the Yellowjacket. I could eskimo roll the Yellowjack, but found it to be too squirrelly in big water. The viper is fast and nimble and the viper XL is far superior in stability and handling. I'm 6foot 4 and 290 lbs and love the way the XL handles!!! You can't go wrong with this boat for Intermediate and Advanced IK paddlers!

I came to the Viper in reverse to the usual path. Rather than as a beginner looking for a boat to grow into, I’m an ageing out hard boater. I needed a boat that would accommodate needs for two replaced hips in comfort and safety. I found the locked in knees up position didn’t feel good during 2-3 trips per week. Nevertheless I expected performance. The Viper XL did not let me down . Eddy line spin outs, surfing, peeling out of Eddys are all still there. With a high angle white water paddle acceleration is good, making ferrying forwards and backwards easy. The inflated back rest and foot rest give comfortable support, extra buoyancy for deep holes. The thigh braces let you feel locked in for control, but slip off easily in a flip
The boat is durable and well made. It totally exceeded my expectations.
